South Arm Peninsula is one of Hobart's playgrounds offering fantastic rest and recreation to many Taswegians. Forming the eastern bank of the lower Derwent Estuary, the peninsula is popular with the surfers, weekenders and locals, as the beaches on the southern coast are often responsible for some of the best surfing in close proximity to Hobart. Those in the know are aware that Pipe Clay Lagoon near Cremorne produces some of Tasmania’s supply of fine oysters. Magnificent cherries and olive oil are produced close to South Arm, wild flowers and many other small craft businesses, a wonderful coastal and rural setting.
The terrain is relatively flat so walking is easy for anyone with an average level of fitness. The view across the river back towards the city, with Mt Wellington forming a picturesque backdrop, is quite different to any you might see at other vantage points around the Derwent estuary. The waters are both calm and shallow, hence marginally warmer than other parts of Hobart, making the beaches ideal for families.
The magnificent Halfmoon Bay where the distillery is located offers wonderful long beach walks, water sports, fishing and always presents well. South Arm like so many smaller Tasmanian towns is a real gem and worth visiting.
